Eco-friendly buildings in urban areas will have to balance land value with opportunity costs, along with energy, water and other resource costs. The energy and carbon footprint of large projects have to be minimized.

Apartment projects, shopping and entertainment complexes, hotels, hospitals, commercial offices can all be designed with a careful mix of technologies and materials which will bring in the desired advantages of lesser air-conditioning loads, water harvesting and recycling, lesser glare, better natural lighting and ventilation etc, thus enhancing aesthetic living and working comforts.
