Swa Swara, Gokarna

For M/s Cgh Earth Group, who has set the standard for luxury eco resorts and spas in South India, Swa swara at Gokarna combines years of experience in the industry to create what is expected to be the best yoga beach resort in India.

Primarily catering to the discerning international traveler who seeks to discover ones' ‘inner vibrations', Swa Swara, situated on Om Beach, 6km away from Gokarna, Karnataka, accommodates 24 Luxurious Konkan style villas, Ayurvedic Spa, Restaurant, Library Bar, Music Room, Craft Centre, Swimming Pool, Art Gallery, Exhibition Hall, Yoga Space and related accommodation facilities for a staff strength of 60.

Predominant use of laterite as building material is what strikes ones eye everywhere. The entrance is a majestic laterite catenary vault. The compound wall and retaining walls rising and falling with the ground levels, jalis shading glare, cutting off vision still allowing ventilation, arches of various shapes and sizes, even twisted arches, vaults and chajjas all can be seen of laterite. Signage, lamp masts, pavements, pathways and water stand posts further celebrate versatile uses of the local material laterite.

Roofing in most spaces is of timber and renewable local thatch tied at joints with copper bolts and copper wires. Timber and tile combination is used where chances of catching fire is higher ; and in places where clean interior ceiling is needed such as in bedrooms, baths, toilets and kitchen, there is a thin shell of RCC or filler slab.

Bio-climatic design ensures that less than 10% of total built-up area needed to have air-conditioners. It is noteworthy that for a built –up area of 69,000 sqft., the project has only 56 tons air-conditioner load.

Crafted aesthetics take priority here. Thus we have the brick masonry dome with hand made blue ceramic tile cladding assuming the position of ‘sanctum sanctorum'. Terracotta tile flooring, red-oxide crafted columns, seats, niches and flowing terracotta murals bring texture variations. Cane furniture, crafted wooden columns, handrails, trellis works lampshades and other accessories complete the picture perfect.

In treating the Landscape too, attention to detail is be visible. The levels of the natural terrain are least disturbed as the buildings rise and fall with the contour.

Over and above all the said factors, what can be considered to be the most important contribution to ecology sensitive design from Swa swara project is in the integration of the concept of total water management in the design stage itself which includes
a. creation of a rainwater harvesting lake which catches and holds the excessive rain that comes in the three months so as to be useful in the dry months too
b. a decentralized sewage and waste water treatment plant (DEWATS) which will prevent ground water contamination and have the water treatment facility designed such that the waste water can be of quality which can be recycled for tertiary end uses, especially irrigation.
